| This ancient drum is the ancestor of the tablas. Its deep stately tone is well-suited to its current role as accompanist to dhrupad, the oldest surviving classical form of North Indian Music. The treble head is similiar to a tabla head, only thicker. The bass head has no gob. With each playing, the drummer must mix and apply a wheat paste gob to give the head its deep pitch. |
