| This book begins with an introduction to North Indian classical music and in general, then focuses specifically on vocal music. As different rags and thats are introduced, examples of compositions to help the student master the material are included. There are also several vocal exercises included to introduce the rags and thats. Appendices include a glossary and common thats written out to be played on the harmonium. David Courtney studied pakhawaj with Zakir Hussain at the Ali Akbar College of Music. He then studied tabla in India for a number of years with the late Ustad Shaik Dawood Khan of Hyderabad. He has been performing tabla since 1972, and is also well versed in the academic side of music, having written many books on the subject. Chandrakantha Courtney is a professional singer who has performed regularly on TV and the radio. She studied voice with J.V. Subba Rao and has been teaching ince the 1980s. She is the female vocalist for the band “Vani” and works with Young Audiences and Music Beyond Borders to promote arts education and world music. |
