"Singing compositions in each rag and tal is most important, because, while you play an instrument, you are singing through the instrument . . . actually, you are singing inside."
-Ali Akbar Khan

Structure of classes at AACM:

Instruction is offered in Hindustani classical vocal and instrumental music. Vocal music is considered the foundation of all music in this tradition. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan teaches several vocal classes a week and all students are encouraged to participate.

Instrumental Music:
Khansahib also teaches three or four levels of instrumental classes weekly. Most students learn sitar, sarod or violin (there is usually a special class for bowed instruments), but one can learn on any instrument. Guitars, cellos, flutes and basses are not uncommon at the Ali Akbar College.

Percussion:
Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri teaches tabla classes individually or in small groups arranged by the level of the students. Tabla students gain accompaniment experience by playing for vocal and instrumental classes and by practicing with other students.

History of the music:
The structure of classical Indian music dates back several millenia. During the medieval period Hindu and Muslim cultures fused in North India releasing a remarkable period of creativity in the arts and architecture. Music developed an unparalleled character, depth and sophistication under the patronage of emperors. The Hindustani music we hear today was further developed by Ustad Allauddin Khansahib, the father of Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib, who was schooled in both Western and Hindustani music.

Classes at AACM:
This music has traditionally been an oral tradition passed from generation to generation by students hearing and imitating their teachers and memorizing lessons. A notational system exists but students are encouraged to learn by ear. Students are welcome to tape classes if it helps their practice. Every raga taught in class is also notated on the board in the lecture hall and students are encouraged to copy these if it enhances their memorization.

Classes at the Ali Akbar College can be exciting musical events as teachers remember old compositions or spontaneously compose new ones and the students strain to "catch" them.

The teaching staff is augmented by senior students of the master teachers. They assist by reviewing lessons and conducting workshops on technique. Most classes are scheduled in the evening and during the summer on weekends. Elective classes such as Theory, Tal (rhythm), and Listening are held regularly. Concert attendance is an important component in the true learning of music, and there are many concerts sponsored by the College for the students and the general public.
