Ustad Ali
Akbar Khan is a distinguished member of an unbroken musical lineage,
the Seni Baba Allaudin gharana, descended from Mian
Tansen, the chief musician in the Moghul emperor Akbar's court in
15th century India.
Ali Akbar College of Music (AACM) is the only institution outside
India which teaches classical music of the Seni Baba Allauddin
Gharana. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan founded AACM in the U.S. in accordance
with his father's wish to spread the unique music of North India
to the rest of the world. His father, the legendary Padma Vibhushan Dr. Allauddin Khan is considered the greatest musician of India in this century.
AACM Today
AACM established its present location in San Rafael, California, in
1974. Branches of the college have also been established in Fremont,
California and Basel, Switzerland. Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib teaches
the majority of the classes himself. Tabla maestro Pandit
Swapan Chaudhuri teaches percussion.
AACM Students
Since its opening, the College has seen over 5,000 students pass
through its doors. Students of all backgrounds and musical levels
come to learn from the College's master teachers. As students
progress in their musical skills, opportunities to perform are
available at the College and at the numerous cultural venues of
the San Francisco/San Jose metropolitan area. Many of our students
have gone on to successful musical careers as composers, recording
and performing artists. Others have gone on to graduate studies
and teaching positions at music departments of major universities. |
